The week ahead: Valentine's Day, AZ's B-day, & President's Day!

Hello Parents and Families!

This week we will be celebrating Valentine's Day, Thursday, Feb, 14th as 'Friendship Day'. The school does not allow an actual Valentine's celebration, so on Thursday Kindergarten students will be celebrationg their friends and loved ones by doing activities throughout the day themed around friendship. Parents can send a Valentine to their students in their lunchbox, and students can bring Valentines'/Friendship cards to distribute during snack time at 2:15pm to their classmates. Parents can also contribute healthy snacks  for the children to share and eat during our 'Friendship Celebration' for snack time at 2:15pm-2:45pm on 2/14/1013.

This week we will also be celebrating the state of Arizona's 101st birthday! We will do activities themed around Arizona, discuss icons specific to AZ like the state flower, bird, flag, etc. We will also begin an introduction to coins, and their amounts/worth.

On Friday 2/15/13, we will celebrate President's of the U.S.A, both past and present. We will also be doing writing on President's like Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. During math we will also be continuing our discussion and activities using coins and their amounts.

We will also be continuing to do some new learning this week and review some skills from last week.

We will be learning:

In Literacy/Reading we will:
Continue to read with a partner the book of the week, "Where is Pit-Pat?" We will complete and discuss the comprehension questions on the book as well. We will be using a retell rubric to review and retell the beginning, middle, and end of stories independently and with partners.

In Math we will:
Compose and Decompose #'s 1-5 and continue our introduction to addition concepts by beginning to represent addition problems using pictures and numbers. We will also begin an introduction to graphing by answering questions of the week and representing our findings in a chart. We will be doing addition using shapes, coins, stickers and connecting cubes to represent addition number sentences with pictures and numbers.

In Writing we will be:
Continue to work on creating our 'all about' books about the solar system. We will continue to do so using diagrams, charts, table of contents, and 'how to' lists.

Classroom Notes:

* Don't forget to bring in your student's 'Raising a Reader' Book Bags every Friday! Your child will not be allowed to get a new bag  until the old one had been returned, or missing books/items have been returned.

*No school on Monday, Feb. 18th for the President's Day holiday.

Have a wonderful week!

Miss Crowl's Kindergarteners!
